Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy: Part 6
Tuesday October 16th
The first ever episode of Not the Nine O’Clock News, starring the initial core
team of Rowan Atkinson, Pamela Stephenson, Mel Smith and Chris
Langham. I definitely didn’t see it at the time and wouldn’t have been
allowed to stay up late enough in any case. I’d have to wait a good twelve
months or so before I even heard of the show. It’s a strange episode this,
hasn’t quite found its feet yet. The sketch that points the way forward is this
one, which skewers its target mercilessly and still has the power to shock.
Also sadly still relevant. At the time of writing, you can see the full episode
here, but don’t expect it to stay there for long.

Dad amazes me by bringing home the second edition of Doctor Who Weekly.
I had no idea such a comic was available or even possible. Featuring a
seminal comic strip called The Iron Legion, a free set of transfers and a
synopsis of the very first Doctor Who story, An Unearthly Child, I can safely
say this comic changed my life. Until this day, I thought the first ever Doctor
Who story was called Doctor Who and the Daleks and the first Doctor,
William Hartnell, had only ever filmed four stories (thanks to there only
being four Hartnell books available in the range of novelisations published
by Target - well, actually there were five but I didn’t know about the other
one). Doctor Who Weekly changed all that - not just for me, but for
thousands of other kids as well, who suddenly had easy access to an ever-
growing library of information about the show. Though I had loved Doctor
Who all the way through my childhood and my interest in the show itself was
actually waning at the time, this day was the true beginning of my fandom -
the day when I started to know way too much about Doctor Who.

Top of the Pops - another one that isn’t available to watch (at least not in the
UK), nor is it listed in the BBC’s official online list. But it definitely exists, as
evidenced here. It seems this one was airbrushed out of history thanks to
Operation Yewtree, which was investigating claims made against presenter
Dave Lee Travis at the time all these shows were repeated on BBC Four.

Friday October 19th
Last day of my first half-term.
The second of two editions of Friday Night Saturday Morning with guest host
Harold Wilson. His guests this week include Mike Yarwood and Robin Day.
Available to see in its entirety here.
Saturday October 20th
Half term holiday begins.
Doctor Who: City of Death - Part Four. With an audience of 16.1 million, this
episode attained the highest viewing figures Doctor Who has ever managed.
Though this story is considered by many to be among the series’ best, the
most likely reason the show got such high ratings is because ITV was on
strike and thus there were only two channels (BBC 1 and BBC 2) to choose
from. Oh and there’s a great scene with Eleanor Bron and John Cleese.
